Lib-Con alliance?
David Davis (Conservative Shadow Home Secretary until now) announced today that he will resign his Commons seat and fight the bye-election to oppose 42 days' detention without trial and other infringements of civil liberties. Nick Clegg announced the Liberal Democrats will not oppose him. This supports my view that civil liberties are rising to the top of political issues, dividing the Lib Dems from Labour and taking them closer to the Conservatives. Unimaginable though it would have been in the past, I see an alliance between the Conservatives and Lib Dems as a real possibility now. Once the two parties start talking to each other, who knows?; Perhaps the Conservatives will see the merit of electoral reform and, in particular, recognze that STV is the best system to promote poitical freedom.
